HISTORY: An Igbo man, ‘Father of Electricity’ in Nigeria!

Clement Onyemelukwe, Nigerian Chief Electrical Engineer of the country's Electricity Corporation, generated international attention when he married Catherine Zastrow, a white Peace Corps volunteer, who had just completed her service in 1964. Although his parents had rejoiced that he had returned from nine years in the United Kingdom without a foreign white wife, in 1963 he met Catherine in Lagos. “Peace Corps Worker to Wed Nigerian Engineer,” was the headline for a brief article in The New York Times from Lagos, Nigeria on Dec. 23, 1964. Interracial marriage was illegal in Kentucky which was still Catherine's U.S. residence while she was in the Peace Corps. “When her parents returned to Kentucky after the wedding they had to change their phone number because of hate calls. The couple received telegrams from people all over the world, mostly supportive but a few critical. At the age of 11, He was captured by  slave traders from his hometown in Isseke, present day Anambra State and sold into bondage to the British colony of Virginia. He was given the name Gustavus Vassa by one of his many owners, and was forced to serve several masters, among them was a British Naval officer Whom he traveled between four continents with.  These journies helped him to produce the most popular and vivid slave narrative of his era. He purchased his freedom in the year 1777 at the age of 32, after having mastered reading, writing and arithmetic. He settled in England, and soon became a leader of the emerging anti-slavery movement.   He presented one of the first petitions to the British Parliament calling for the abolition of slavery. Eddie Nawgu (born Edwin Okeke) was a Nigerian sorcerer, self-proclaimed prophet and religious figure. He was popularly known in the mid-1990s as Eddie Nawgu amongst Igbo people. His nickname, “Nawgu” came about because he was from Nawgu c ommunity, a town situated in the Dunukofia L.G.A of Anambra State, Nigeria. At the age of 29, Eddie “Nawgu” Okeke, claimed he had been touched by the Biblical God and was given the ability to “see” and “perceive” what the ordinary human eye or other four senses could not intercept. Shortly after he began his ministry, he built a church-like structure and named it ‘Anioma Healing Centre’. He stated that the reasons for creating the ‘Anioma Healing Centre’, was to heal the sick people in the community and restore hope to people but that wasn’t exactly the case. Women and children played a huge role during the Biafra/Nigeria war. Women trained to fight, cooked and took care of Biafran soldiers as well. Children also helped out in their own way. This was called “win-the-war effort”.

The name of a city is a unique characteristic that locals use when they meet other people. There are several ways in which a community gets its name, and there is also a factor in changing a community's name. There are also different ways to change the name, which is why in Igbo land, there are some communities whose names do not match the correct Igbo name.
