It was reliably gathered that the gunmen stormed the area in two Lexus Jeeps and one Toyota Sienna bus around 7:25am. There is apprehension in Enugu metropolis as unidentified gunmen attacked a Nigerian Army checkpoint at Obeagu-Amodu along Amechi-Agbani road in Enugu South local government area of Enugu State. They reportedly opened fire at the combined team of the Nigerian police and the military.  Although, the number of casualties was still sketchy, sources said that all the soldiers and policemen at the checkpoint were killed. Some unconfirmed reports also said that three soldiers and two policemen were killed in the attack while three soldiers escaped with various degrees of injuries. A Peoples Democratic Party PDP chieftain and Senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District, Mr Chimaroke Nnamani has been listed as a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, ahead of next year’s Presidential Election. Nnamani, a former governor of Enugu state is Number 350 on the 422-member campaign council. He is listed as a member of the local government directorate. Senator Nnamani had last month described the presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a strong politician but said he would vote for his own party’s candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Neither the APC nor the council has responded to messages seeking clarifications on the seeming mix up.

An Enugu-based lawyer, Ogochukwu Onyema, who hails from the senatorial district of the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has approached the Federal High Court in Enugu praying it to declare the constituency seat vacant. Ekweremadu is the serving senator from Enugu West constituency where the lawyer prayed the court to declare vacant over the lawmaker’s detention in the United Kingdom where he is facing charges bordering on alleged organ trafficking. According to Onyeama, the seat cannot continue to be vacant while Ekweremadu remains in detention. In the legal proceeding marked FHC/EN/CS/7/2022 filed at the Federal High Court, Enugu, Onyema besought the court “to command and mandate” the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, and PDP to “nominate, and forward” his name to the National Assembly “as a replacement” for Ekweremadu.
