Gunmen hide under Biafra agitation to kill in South-east – Army

A military official says the influence of drugs is contributing to the rising crime rate in the country. The  Nigerian army   says the gunmen terrorising residents of the South-east hide under the cloak of Biafra agitation to commit crimes in the region. The new General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Umar Musa, stated this on Friday when he visited Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State at the Government House, Awka. This was contained in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Christian Aburime. Mr Musa, a major-general, took over from Taoreed Lagbaja, also a major-general, who is now the GOC, 1 Mechanised Division, Kaduna. The new 82 Division GOC whose division superintends over Mr Soludo’s Anambra, visited to inform the governor of his assumption of duty. Nigerian Army Sacks Anambra Community In Reprisal Over Killing Of Five Soldiers, Shoot At Residents.

It has been reported that seven persons including five soldiers were ambushed and shot dead on Wednesday around Zenith Bank area in Umunze town. Troops of the Nigerian Army have sacked Umunze community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State in what appeared as a reprisal attack following the alleged killing of five soldiers and two civilians in the area on Wednesday. SaharaReporters had reported that seven persons including five soldiers were ambushed and shot dead on Wednesday around Zenith Bank area in Umunze town. However, hundreds of troops were reported to have invaded the community, shooting indiscriminately, and injuring several people. INSECURITY: Nigerian Soldiers Feared Dead As Gunmen Attack Army Checkpoint In Enugu.

It was reliably gathered that the gunmen stormed the area in two Lexus Jeeps and one Toyota Sienna bus around 7:25am. There is apprehension in Enugu metropolis as unidentified gunmen attacked a Nigerian Army checkpoint at Obeagu-Amodu along Amechi-Agbani road in Enugu South local government area of Enugu State. SaharaReporters reliably gathered that the gunmen stormed the area in two Lexus Jeeps and one Toyota Sienna bus around 7:25am. They reportedly opened fire at the combined team of the Nigerian police and the military.  Although, the number of casualties was still sketchy, sources said that all the soldiers and policemen at the checkpoint were killed. We Battled Unknown Gunmen Yesterday In Ohafia, No Casualties on Both Side say Nigerian Army.

The Nigeria Army has cleared the air over an alleged ‘fierce exchange of fire between soldiers and some unknown gunmen, Friday evening at Ebe Ohafia. According to reports, unknown gunmen and soldiers of the 14 Brigade were engaged in a heavy gun duel, a situation that led to panic in the ancient town as locals abandoned their homes and fled for fear of the unknown. Another version said soldiers were searching homes and shooting sporadically in the community, a development that led to panic and apprehension. But when contacted, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Innocent Omale, said soldiers were not searching homes nor shooting sporadically contrary to allegations. Amnesty International, AI, Nigeria has said three persons suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have been released following their detention at 14 Brigade Nigerian Army Ohafia, Abia State, for two and a half years.  It noted that officers of the Nigerian Army arrested them on 27 February 2020 at the Imo River community in Abia State. The human right watchdog disclosed this on Thursday via its official Twitter handle. https://twitter.com/amnestynigeria/status/1570066828180836357?s=21 The organization said it believes in freedom, justice, and equality and appealed to Nigerian authorities to provide helpful information about the status of other victims of enforced disappearance. According to Amnesty International, those released were Sunday Nwafor, 59 years; Uzonwanne Ejiofor, 48 years; and Wilfred Dike, 36 years.
