Borno Government Warns Youths Against ‘Unruly’ Social Media Conduct | #NwokeukwuMascot

The Borno State government has expressed deep concern over what it describes as the “unruly behaviour and disorderly conduct” of some youths on social media, warning against threats, inflammatory remarks, and actions deemed contrary to the state’s cultural values and societal norms.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Directorate of Culture, Ministry of Information and Internal Security, the government condemned recent social media posts showing young individuals wielding knives, verbally attacking government officials, and challenging lawful policies.

“Some of the postings depict some youngsters holding knives, insulting government officials, and challenging lawful policies of the government. This is unacceptable,” the statement read.

The government reiterated its commitment to preserving the values and traditions of Borno State, which is widely known as the “Home of Peace,” and urged young people to conduct themselves in a manner that fosters harmony and mutual respect.

“Borno State prides itself as the ‘Home of Peace’ where our diverse communities live in peace, togetherness, fairness, tolerance, and harmony. We urge our teeming youth to maintain an orderly conduct consistent with our age-hallowed tradition, norms, and values,” the statement added.

While affirming the constitutional rights of citizens to free speech and peaceful assembly, the government warned that it would not tolerate any actions that breach public order or incite unrest.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Borno State Government respects the constitutional right of every Nigerian regarding freedom of expression, free speech, and peaceful assembly. However, the government will not stand by and allow citizens to breach law and order or violate the constitution,” it warned.

The government assured the public that its doors remain open for constructive engagement and legitimate expressions of grievances. It also called on citizens to refrain from spreading misinformation, making inflammatory statements, or engaging in hate speech.

“Anyone who wishes to express himself or herself should do so within the ambits of the law. Citizens should refrain from making counter-intuitive statements, spreading fake news, or demonstrating hateful conduct. Anyone who violates the law will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement concluded.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of social media by some individuals in the state, raising questions about the balance between free expression and responsible digital conduct.
