Senator Austin Akobundu Confronts Oshiomhole in Senate Over False Narrative on Humphrey Nwosu (VIDEO) | #NwokeukwuMascot

Senator Austin Akobundu, representing Abia Central Senatorial District, fiercely tackled Senator Adams Oshiomhole of Edo North Senatorial District on the Senate floor on Thursday, challenging what he described as an attempt to distort historical facts regarding the role of the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu in the June 12, 1993, election saga.

During deliberations on a motion advocating for the immortalization of Prof. Nwosu—who was the chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC) and oversaw what is widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest election—Oshiomhole controversially claimed that “Humphrey Nwosu’s courage failed him when most needed and cannot be rewarded,” among other questionable assertions.

Oshiomhole’s remarks drew a sharp rebuke from Senator Akobundu, who described them as “very uncharitable.” He reminded the former Edo State Governor that former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, had recently admitted to his mistakes in the annulment of the June 12 election. Akobundu countered, “If Humphrey Nwosu did not conduct a credible election, how would Abiola’s election be validated? So, it was a validation.”

The Abia Central lawmaker, visibly displeased, stood firm in defense of Nwosu’s legacy. “I was in service during the June 12 saga, and I know a whole lot about the doggedness and courage that Humphrey Nwosu demonstrated up to the point when he was stopped from continuing with the results,” he asserted. “To stand here and not acknowledge that Humphrey was a fighter who stood his ground against military leadership to ensure democracy was enthroned is most uncharitable.”

Akobundu further lambasted Oshiomhole’s comments, stating, “It is very uncharitable for Senator Oshiomhole to say that when he (Nwosu) was alive, he didn’t do anything. Let me bring it out that Humphrey Nwosu published a book where he detailed all that happened, including the results that validated Abiola’s election.”

The exchange ultimately led Akobundu and several of his colleagues, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, to stage a walkout in protest of Oshiomhole’s position.

Beyond the Senate floor, Nigerians from various backgrounds have continued to praise Akobundu, Abaribe, and their colleagues for their bold stance in pushing for Nwosu’s immortalization. Many have lauded them as courageous lawmakers dedicated to upholding historical truth and ensuring that deserving figures receive due recognition in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
