Fresh controversy has erupted over the credibility of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claim regarding his choice of running mate for the 2023 presidential election. A newly surfaced report from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Advisory Committee for the selection of a Vice Presidential candidate has contradicted Atiku’s public justification for picking former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over his closest rival, Nyesom Wike.



Atiku, in a bid to defend his decision, had claimed that Okowa was ranked as the top choice by the PDP selection committee, while Wike was placed second, and Udom Emmanuel, the former Akwa Ibom governor, came third. However, the official report dated June 14, 2022, tells a different story. The committee had actually ranked Governor Nyesom Wike as the preferred choice for the position, followed by Okowa in second place, and Emmanuel in third.



This revelation has sparked outrage among political observers, further deepening mistrust in Atiku’s leadership. Critics have accused the former Vice President of deliberately misleading the public and disrespecting the integrity of the committee’s decision. Some have even linked his actions to his credibility as a leader, questioning why he would make such a false claim, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.




A political analyst reacting to the leaked report remarked: “Imagine Atiku can’t even honour the Holy Month of Ramadan and keep his lies till the end of the fasting period. How can a man who publicly contradicts the truth be trusted with national leadership?”



The exposure of this discrepancy reinforces long-standing concerns about Atiku’s political maneuvers and raises fresh doubts about his transparency. With the 2023 election now in the past, this revelation continues to serve as a reminder of the intrigues and internal conflicts that shaped the PDP’s campaign.
