EFCC Summons Abia LG Account Officers Amid Federal Investigation into Financial Mismanagement | #NwokeukwuMascot

 News

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited the Heads of Accounts and Treasurers of all 17 local government areas in Abia State to its Uyo office as part of an ongoing investigation into local government financial activities following the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.

The Federal Government is scrutinizing financial records and expenditures of local governments across the country in line with the judgment, which emphasized financial independence for the third tier of government. As part of the probe, Abia local government officials have been directed to present comprehensive documentation detailing daily financial transactions, including salary schedules, overhead payments, and records of capital projects executed within the period under review.

Additionally, they are required to submit records of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) collected within their respective local government areas. Sources indicate that EFCC officials have warned the civil servants about the consequences of presenting falsified or manipulated figures, a caution that has reportedly left many officials unsettled.

Already, officials from several local governments, including Obingwa and Aba North, are said to have appeared before the EFCC in Uyo, where they are being questioned over alleged financial discrepancies. The Abia State Ministry of Local Government is reportedly in a state of panic as revelations of fraud and corruption continue to emerge.

However, a major challenge facing these officials is the centralized control of local government funds in Abia, which has left them struggling to even transport themselves to Uyo, let alone cover other miscellaneous expenses related to the probe. This financial stranglehold has further exposed the extent of alleged manipulation in the management of local government allocations.

Meanwhile, some Abia local government officials are pointing fingers at disparities in fund allocations, noting that some local governments, particularly in Akwa Ibom State, have been receiving sufficient funds to execute key capital projects even after settling salary obligations. This development has fueled speculations that the Abia State Government is rushing to amend the Local Government Administration Law in an attempt to cover up alleged financial irregularities.

Shockingly, EFCC officials are said to be taken aback by their findings so far, especially considering the high level of media noise emanating from Abia State, which had painted a vastly different picture of financial prudence. The ongoing revelations now raise serious concerns about the true state of local government finances and governance in Abia.

With the EFCC’s searchlight now firmly on Abia, the investigation is expected to unravel deep-seated financial dealings, exposing discrepancies that could have far-reaching consequences for the state’s political and administrative leadership.
