BREAKING: FG Begins Payment of ₦77,000 NYSC Allowance After Prolonged Delays | #NwokeukwuMascot
News
Abuja, Nigeria – After months of anticipation and frustration, the Federal Government has finally commenced payment of the revised ₦77,000 monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
Reports confirm that several corps members received credit alerts on Wednesday, signaling the implementation of the long-awaited increase. This development comes after repeated assurances from the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, who had pledged that all outstanding payments would be settled by the end of March.
The delay in disbursing the increment, which was approved by President Bola Tinubu, had been attributed to budgetary constraints and bureaucratic hurdles. Despite the president’s directive, formal allocation of funds was required before the payments could be processed.
Speaking during a recent interview on Channels TV, Minister Olawande reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring corps members receive their entitlements. He explained that the approval of the new allowance did not immediately translate to disbursement due to necessary budgetary adjustments.
“I have explained this several times. Some people say I always mention it’s a process, and it is seriously a process. It was not in the budget when the president announced it. Some agencies and parastatals need to have their salaries included in the budget before anything can be done or paid out,” he stated.
The delay had sparked concerns, particularly among outgoing corps members who feared they would miss out on the increment. However, Olawande assured that all arrears would be paid.
“You saw the new DG when they asked him, what about those who are going out now? Are they going to receive their backlogs? He said, ‘We have your account details; we will put it (the allowance) through.’ You may not like to hear this, but I can tell you the payment will happen at the end of this month,” the minister affirmed.
The news has been met with relief among corps members who had endured months of uncertainty. The increment, which represents a significant raise from the previous stipend of ₦33,000, is expected to ease the financial burden faced by many young graduates undergoing the mandatory one-year service.
With payments now in motion, corps members across the country can finally access their long-awaited entitlements, marking the resolution of a critical issue that had triggered protests and public outcry.
