Defection Fallout: Abia PDP Moves to Reclaim Isiukwuato State Constituency Seat Following Lawmaker’s Defection | #NwokeukwuMascot
News
The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to reclaim the Isiukwuato State Constituency seat at the Abia State House of Assembly following the defection of Hon. Lucky Udoka Johnson from the PDP to the Labour Party (LP).
In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Eric Ikwuagwu, the party condemned Johnson’s decision to retain the legislative seat despite leaving the party under whose platform he was elected. The PDP cited Section 109 (1)(g) of the Nigerian Constitution (1999 as amended), which stipulates that a lawmaker who defects from the party that sponsored their election must vacate their seat unless there is a division or merger within the original party.
The PDP dismissed any claim of division within its structure, declaring Johnson’s action unconstitutional and politically unethical. The party warned that it would take all necessary legal and institutional steps to ensure that Isiukwuato State Constituency remains under PDP’s legislative representation.
“The defection of the 27 lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly has already plunged the state into a constitutional crisis. Abia PDP is determined never to allow our state degenerate into any form of crisis by the action of one man pursuing his private interest,” the statement read.
To enforce its stance, the Abia PDP has resolved to take immediate actions, including: “Petitioning the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Johnson’s seat vacant in line with constitutional provisions.
“Instituting legal proceedings in a court of competent jurisdiction to enforce the constitutional mandate and prevent any form of legislative illegality.”
The party assured its members and the general public of its commitment to upholding democratic integrity and electoral justice in the state.
PDP Chairman Reacts: ‘No More Gambling with Notoriety Disguised as Popularity’
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Abia PDP, Elder Abraham Amah, expressed strong dissatisfaction with Johnson’s defection and vowed that the party would undertake stricter candidate screening going forward.
“Henceforth, the Abia PDP will undertake thorough background checks before entrusting its flag to any individual—having learned, perhaps the hard way, that political roulette with characters of questionable pedigree often ends in public embarrassment. No more gambling with notoriety disguised as popularity; the party now prefers candidates with substance over spectacle, integrity over Instagram,” Amah stated.
His comments reaffirms the PDP’s commitment to fielding credible candidates with proven loyalty and integrity, rather than those driven by fleeting political opportunism.
Johnson’s defection has already led to significant political upheaval, with his Chief of Staff, Director of Media and Publicity, and Deputy Women Leader of the Lucky Johnson Cares Foundation all resigning in protest. They cited their continued allegiance to the PDP and rejected any association with Johnson’s new political direction.
With speculation intensifying over Governor Alex Otti’s rumored defection from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Johnson’s move has further heightened political tensions in Abia State. The PDP’s swift response suggests that a legal battle may soon unfold, setting a precedent for party loyalty and constitutional adherence in the state legislature.
