The women of Obibor, Asa, in Umunneato Autonomous Community, Ukwa West LGA of Abia State, on Friday stormed the palace of their traditional ruler, Eze Tunde Onyemachi Ehiemere, demanding justice over the destruction of their farms by cattle allegedly belonging to Fulani herdsmen.

The protesters, who demanded compensation for the cassava and other crops destroyed by the cattle—losses running into millions of naira—called for an end to cattle grazing on their farms.

Some of the women, who wept during the protest, lamented that crops in their farms, including those ready for harvest and those still in the development stage, had been devastated after herdsmen led their animals onto the farmland.

They expressed frustration and anger over the repeated incidents of cattle encroachment, which they said had resulted in substantial financial losses and posed a major threat to their livelihoods. Some of them noted that they had taken loans to cultivate the farms.

Addressing the protesters, the traditional ruler, Eze Ehiemere, commended them for their patience and restraint in not taking the law into their own hands.

He assured them that he would reach out to relevant government authorities to address the issue and urged them to return home.
