INEC Warns Governor Fubara Against Misleading Public on Political Defections | #NwokeukwuMascot

ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, against making misleading statements regarding political defections, particularly those involving lawmakers.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the INEC Chairman, issued a statement on Friday in Abuja, addressing remarks attributed to Governor Fubara. The governor had accused the commission of selectively conducting elections to fill vacancies arising from the defection of members of the National and State Assemblies.
Oyekanmi noted that while no specific instances of selective action were cited, the governor’s statement particularly accused INEC of deliberately failing to conduct elections to fill vacancies resulting from the ongoing crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly, where two factions are battling for control.
“In the midst of the crisis, three or so lawmakers have declared the seats of 27 members vacant, and vice versa,” Oyekanmi stated.
He emphasized that INEC is fully aware of the situation in the Rivers State House of Assembly but noted that the matter is currently before the courts and, therefore, sub judice.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the commission has been joined in several suits filed by litigants at various courts, including the Supreme Court,” he added.
“Under these circumstances, the commission must await the final judicial pronouncement before taking any action that could ultimately amount to a nullity and a waste of public funds.”
Oyekanmi urged public officeholders to exercise caution in their statements to avoid misleading the public and casting aspersions on public institutions, especially in cases where judicial proceedings are still ongoing.
