Tempers flared in the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday during the 2025 budget defence session for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), as the proceedings descended into chaos. The rowdy scene unfolded when two lawmakers raised concerns that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, was presenting figures that did not align with the documents previously circulated to the committee members.
Despite the concerns, the Chairman of the Joint Committee on Police Affairs attempted to allow the IGP to continue with his presentation. This decision sparked outrage among some lawmakers, who insisted that the discrepancies needed to be addressed before proceeding. The disagreement escalated into a heated shouting match, disrupting the session.
Amid the chaos, a principal officer of the 10th Senate, Senator Onyekachi Nwoebonyi, representing Ebonyi North, expressed his frustration by storming out of the committee room. His abrupt departure shocked many of his colleagues, particularly members of the House of Representatives who were also present. As the senator walked out angrily, some lawmakers jeered at him, further adding to the tension in the room.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about transparency and accountability in budget presentations. Many lawmakers have expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the 2025 budget defence process, particularly regarding the police force’s financial plans.
As of the time of this report, neither Senator Nwoebonyi nor the IGP has issued a formal statement addressing the incident. However, the development has sparked debates over the need for stricter adherence to procedural standards during budget defence sessions to avoid similar confrontations in the future.
The session eventually resumed after tempers cooled, but the incident remains a glaring reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s legislative and executive arms in maintaining harmony during critical budgetary discussions.
