Heavy Duty Truck Rams Into Residential Building In Benue State, Kills 14 Persons | #NwokeukwuMascot

A heavy duty truck with the registration number Kaduna DKA 738 XB has reportedly crashed into a residential building in Okete community in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State, killing 14 people in their beds, including three Muslims who were praying by the roadside.



The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday.




Sources said the initial death toll of nine increased to 14 after five of the survivors, who were rushed to the hospital, later succumbed to their injuries, according to a Vanguard report.



The truck, which was en route to Abuja via the Otukpo-Oweto Road, reportedly veered off course after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.



A source was quoted as saying, “It appears the truck’s brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control and crash into a house where some of the victims were sleeping. 



“Six people were killed instantly in the building, while three Muslims observing their morning prayers by the roadside also perished.”



According to the source, several others were injured in the crash and were rushed to the hospital. Tragically, five of the injured later died, bringing the total number of fatalities to 14. 



The source added, “The community members, who were woken by the loud crash, managed to rescue some people who were trapped under the truck. This likely prevented the death toll from being even higher. It’s a tragic day for us.”



The source further said that the whereabouts of the truck driver and his assistant are currently unknown. 


Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Catherine Anene, said that an investigation had been launched into the cause of the accident.
