Some Workers of the Aba North Local Government Area have staged a protest over the non-payment of their December salaries and 13th-month bonuses.
The aggrieved employees, carrying placards, expressed frustration over alleged errors in the biometric system used to process their payments. They accused the consultant in charge, Chris Ugwunmadu, of sabotaging their welfare.
Speaking during the protest, a worker from the finance department lamented the hardships faced by employees who diligently logged in and out during December, only to be flagged as absent or assigned inaccurate attendance percentages. “I came to work every day, yet the biometric report claimed I was absent 17% of the time. This is unfair,” he said.
The workers alleged that the biometric errors have caused severe hardships, leaving many unable to feed their families or afford transportation to work.
They noted that despite Governor Alex Otti’s worker-friendly policies and the timely release of funds for salaries and bonuses, the biometric consultant, identified as Mr. Chris, has failed to rectify the errors.
One worker remarked, “Our governor has been consistent in paying salaries. The problem is the consultant’s inefficiency, which has caused unnecessary suffering for workers who rely on these payments, especially during the festive period.”
The protesters claimed that promises to address the payment issues have not been fulfilled. They called on Governor Otti to intervene urgently and ensure their payments are made without further delays.
The workers also expressed concerns over the non-payment of the 13th-month bonus, which, unlike regular salaries, does not rely on biometric verification.
Over 100 affected staff members are yet to receive their December salaries and bonuses, further compounding their financial difficulties. The workers vowed to halt all biometric logging processes until the matter is resolved.
