Mr Obinna Oriaku, a former commissioner for finance in Abia state has responded to speculated lawsuits circulating on social media regarding a libel suit demanding one billion naira, filed by Mr. Ken Ahia, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by Oriaku Media Group, titled “Re: Ken Ahia SAN Sues Former Abia Commissioner for Finance, Obinna Oriaku, Over Alleged Libelous Publication, Demands N1 Billion in Damages,” Oriaku media team noted the speculative as a broader effort to silence dissenting voices in the state. The statement also urged the Senior Advocate of Nigeria to adhere to proper legal procedures for service, rather than relying on social media platforms.
The statement reads in full, “Obinna Oriaku Media Group’s attention has been drawn to a recent publication by PUO Reports, which publicized the lawsuit filed by Ken Ahia, SAN. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria is taking legal action over a report published by www.newmirror.ng on October 26, 2024, titled “Shameless Cover-Up of a Drowning Administration Caught in the Act,” which he has described as libelous, demanding N1 billion in damages.
“We view this lawsuit as part of a broader strategy to silence opposition voices in Abia State and deflect attention from alleged ongoing looting in the state. Notably, Obinna Oriaku is the sixth Abian to face legal threats for expressing dissenting views about Mr. Ahia or the current administration. We understand that he is warming up to sue another set of people including PDP officials.
“While it is within Mr. Ahia’s rights to pursue legal redress, it has become his habitual approach to threaten any dissenting opinion with court action. We wish to remind him that the courts are not his exclusive domain, and every citizen has the right to fair legal proceedings.
“It is worth noting that proper service of court processes in cases of this nature is either personal or through substituted means. However, in this instance, we learned about the purported court action through a social media blogger. Since last week, Mr. Ahia has been circulating court documents to vocal Abians, apparently gloating over his decision to sue Mr. Oriaku. This appears to be an attempt to intimidate and silence opposing voices.
“Ironically, We observed that same individuals now resorting to lawsuits were responsible for sponsoring libelous publications against previous administrations. If Mr. Ahia’s intention is to intimidate Abians into submission, he has failed. Abians remain resolute and will not be deterred from expressing their views on the affairs of the Ministry of Justice or the state at large.
“The publication in question exposed how N60 million was allegedly recommended as payment to Mr. Ahia for drafting a single contract agreement with Julius Berger Nigeria. We maintain that this action is both morally and procedurally wrong, particularly as Abia State has competent civil servants who have historically handled such tasks and if the state must hire external solicitor, the rules of engagement ought to conform with due process.
“Since the exposure of these documents, which revealed the payment details, Mr. Ahia has been unsettled. It is evident that the publication dismantled his narrative that Governor Alex Otti has been neglecting those who contributed to his 2023 electoral victory. The revelations also confirmed that Mr. Ahia himself has benefited significantly, contrary to his earlier claims.
In conclusion, the statement reaffirmed Oriaku’s readiness to face Mr. Ahia in court, while urging him to adhere to proper legal procedures and refrain from publicizing court matters on social media. The group emphasized that Abians will remain steadfast in speaking out against injustice and committed to promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
“We are prepared to meet Mr. Ahia in court to defend the truth. However, we urge him to follow the appropriate legal processes and refrain from using social media to publicize court matters. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, he should uphold the dignity and decorum expected of his rank and status.
“Abians will continue to speak out against injustice and remain steadfast in their commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.”
