Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has paid a heartfelt visit to the family of the late Professor Uche Ikonne, the 2023 Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who passed away shortly before the election.
The visit, which took place at the Ikonne family’s country home in Agburuike, Isiala Ngwa North, was marked by reflections on the life and legacy of the late professor. Dr. Ikpeazu commended the family for their resilience and unwavering commitment to upholding the values and vision of Professor Ikonne, who was also a former Vice Chancellor of Abia State University.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Ikpeazu remarked, “The strength and positivity displayed by this family in the face of such a great loss are a testament to the enduring spirit of Professor Ikonne. His contributions to education and governance in Abia State remain indelible.”
Barrister (Mrs.) Uche Ikonne, wife of the late academic and political figure, expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Ikpeazu for his continued support and close relationship with the family. Reflecting on her husband’s final days, she said, “If there was any regret Uche had, even in his last moments, it was the feeling that he might have disappointed you, Dr. Ikpeazu, ala Ngwa, and Abia State.”
Dr. Chike Uche Ikonne, the son of the late professor, echoed his mother’s sentiments. He emphasized his father’s deep commitment to Dr. Ikpeazu and their shared aspirations for the progress of Abia State. He also thanked the former governor for remembering and visiting the family during their time of grief.
In his response, Dr. Ikpeazu consoled the family, describing Professor Ikonne’s death as a monumental loss not only to the Ikonne family but also to the people of Ngwa land and Abia State at large. He urged the family to take solace in the impactful life that the late professor lived.
The visit concluded with a solemn moment as Dr. Ikpeazu offered prayers at the tomb of the late Professor Ikonne, asking for divine strength for the family and eternal rest for the departed.
