Umuahia —In a move honoring the legacy of Abia State’s First Executive Governor, the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, OON, the current Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially renamed Abia State Polytechnic to Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba. The decision is a tribute to Dr. Onu’s contributions to Abia’s development and his role in establishing a foundation for the state’s governance.

The renaming was announced by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, in a statement released today. Governor Otti emphasized that renaming the institution reflects the state’s enduring respect for Dr. Onu’s legacy and added that this change aims to inspire students and staff to uphold the values of service, excellence, and integrity for which Dr. Onu was known.

However, the decision has sparked controversy among netizens, who have raised concerns over the institution’s new name, especially regarding potential abbreviations. Many online users debated names such as “OnuPOLY” or “Ogbopoly”—a blend of Dr. Onu’s name and the term “polytechnic”—for what was formerly known as ASPoly. These informal abbreviations have generated mixed reactions, with some supporters seeing it as a fitting homage, while others question the clarity and suitability of the new labels.

Located in Aba, Abia State Polytechnic has long been a key institution in the state’s educational landscape, offering technical and vocational training across various disciplines.

As Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, the institution is expected to continue its mission of developing skilled professionals, though under a name that some believe requires clearer and more universally accepted branding.

Further details on the renaming ceremony and related events will be released in due course, according to the statement from the Governor’s office.

The Abia State government has yet to comment on the public’s concerns regarding abbreviations, but officials expressed confidence that the name change would ultimately reflect positively on the institution’s legacy and inspire its community.
