The 42-year-old construction worker was found guilty and sentenced to six strokes of the cane and a fine by a Sharia court judge, according to state news agency Bernama.
The caning is scheduled to take place at a mosque on December 6 following Friday prayers, provided the man does not file an appeal, announced Terengganu state executive councillor Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, a report by Reuters said.
"This punishment involves caning, but what makes it unusual this time is the judge's decision for it to be conducted publicly," he said in a Facebook video.
"This is a new development in Terengganu. Previously, such sentences were executed in closed settings."
The man’s sentence marks him as the first individual in Terengganu to be publicly caned for ‘khalwat’ under recent amendments to the state’s Islamic laws.
The changes, which came into effect this year, allowed for the public execution of such punishments. Malaysia’s dual-track legal system applies both secular and Islamic laws, and caning is used for offences including rape and drug trafficking.
However, some groups, such as women, men over 50, and those sentenced to death, are exempt.
Terengganu, which is governed by the Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), has seen stricter interpretations of Islamic law.
In 2018, two women were publicly caned for attempting lesbian sex, an event that sparked international outrage.
