Ugwunagbo Local Government Area (LGA) has descended into chaos and uncertainty following a disputed election outcome that has left residents questioning who the legitimate Deputy Chairman is. The confusion stems from a recent local government election held last Saturday, after which Elder Justice Nwachukwu was declared Deputy Chairman by the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) and issued a Certificate of Return. However, to the surprise of many, Governor Alex Otti swore in another individual, Ugochukwu Ukaegbu, as Deputy Chairman the following day.




The situation has led to significant tension, with both men asserting their positions and a rift growing within the local political landscape. Eyewitnesses report escalating confrontations between the two factions, with each claiming legal legitimacy.




Adding fuel to the dispute is a set of conflicting documents that have come to light. A document obtained by NwokeukwuMascot.com reveals that ABSIEC published two separate lists for the Deputy Chairman position, each listing a different name. This inconsistency has only deepened the controversy, leading many residents and political observers to question the integrity of the election process.




Political analysts and commentators have voiced strong criticism of ABSIEC, accusing the commission, led by Professor Chima George, of gross negligence and administrative failure. Many argue that the election itself lacked transparency, suggesting that the current chaos could have been avoided if the electoral body had exercised due diligence.





“This whole debacle has shown ABSIEC’s ineptitude,” one political commentator noted. “Not only was the election questionable, but even producing a single, accurate list seems beyond their capacity. This is an embarrassment to democratic processes in Abia State.”




The situation remains tense as both Nwachukwu and Ukaegbu continue to assert their authority, leaving residents and officials alike in a state of confusion. Calls for ABSIEC to clarify the matter are growing, with local leaders and concerned citizens demanding a swift resolution to restore order in Ugwunagbo LGA.
