Umuahia — The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised serious concerns over claims made by Governor Alex Otti regarding the alleged disbursement of N90 billion to contractors in the state. In an open letter addressed to the governor, the PDP questioned the legitimacy of the purported debt payments, which Governor Otti attributed to liabilities incurred by the previous PDP-led administration.

The letter, signed by Elder Abraham Amah, the Abia State PDP Chairman, called on Governor Otti to provide evidence of the N90 billion debt and clarify the basis for these financial transactions. According to the PDP, they are unaware of any such debt left behind by the past administration, and they believe the governor’s claims require substantiation.

“We must express our profound concern regarding your assertion that such a significant sum can be disbursed to settle debts that, as per our understanding, lack verifiable documentation and due process,” the letter stated. “It will serve the interests of Abians if you put out the records as proof of your claims.”

The PDP urged Governor Otti to disclose the names of the contractors and companies that received payments from this alleged N90 billion, arguing that transparency in financial dealings is crucial for maintaining public trust. The party emphasized that Abia citizens deserve to know the beneficiaries of such large-scale disbursements, especially when questions about the authenticity of the debt remain unanswered.

Furthermore, the PDP expressed alarm over rumors that the current administration may have diverted funds to enrich Signature Bank, raising further concerns about the integrity of these transactions. The party stressed the need for Governor Otti to reassure the public about the legitimacy of these payments, as continued speculation could undermine confidence in his administration.

“Moreover, the speculation surrounding these payments raises alarm bells among our constituents. With your administration allegedly enriching Signature Bank with an additional N90 billion, it is crucial that you assure the public of the integrity and legitimacy of these transactions. Our people deserve to have confidence in their leaders, and without clear communication, such confidence is eroded.”

The letter also touched on perceived inconsistencies in Governor Otti’s previous assurances regarding financial prudence and project funding. The PDP urged the governor to promptly address these issues, reinforcing his commitment to transparency and accountability, which are essential for effective governance.

“As a government that has promised transparency, we implore you to take immediate action to clarify these matters,” the PDP stated. “Our people deserve to have confidence in their leaders, and without clear communication, such confidence is eroded.”

The open letter concluded with a call for Governor Otti to engage in dialogue with the opposition party and address these pressing concerns for the betterment of Abia State.

Governor Alex Otti’s administration has yet to respond to the allegations and demands for transparency raised by the Abia PDP. The issue is expected to generate significant debate among political stakeholders in the state, especially given the substantial amount of money in question.

Observers are watching closely to see how the governor will address these allegations and whether he will provide the requested details to substantiate his claims. The unfolding controversy adds another layer of tension to the already heated political climate in Abia State, where transparency and accountability remain hot-button issues.
