Aba, Abia State — The Acting Chairman of the Abia State Labour Party (LP), Hon. Prince G.O. Ndubueze, has accused Governor Alex Otti of using the Labour Party merely as a vehicle to secure his gubernatorial win and imposing his handpicked candidates for the upcoming November 2 local government elections. Ndubueze made these allegations during a live interview on Enyimba FM, Aba, where he expressed concern over Otti’s alleged disregard for the party’s political process and leadership.

According to Ndubueze, Governor Otti has repeatedly undermined the party’s State Working Committee (SWC) by bypassing its role in conducting the local government primaries. He accused Otti of instructing his appointees like Mrs. Victoria Onwubiko to organize the Obingwa Local Government primaries without the SWC’s approval, an action the party leadership firmly rejected. Ndubueze further alleged that Otti had assigned the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to oversee the selection of chairmanship and councillorship candidates, with the instruction of limiting the number of contestants to three.

“Governor Otti wanted to cap the number of candidates to just three for the local government elections, but we stood our ground and said no. Everyone who wishes to contest should be allowed to purchase forms and participate in the primaries,” Ndubueze stated during the interview.

He also referenced the ongoing controversy surrounding several candidates who won the Labour Party primaries but are now running on the platform of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). Citing specific examples, he mentioned Maxwell Nwadike, who won the Labour Party primary in Osusu Amakwa Primary School in Obingwa on October 13 but is now campaigning under the ZLP(Video Below) without officially resigning from the Labour Party.

“Today, many of the candidates flying ZLP posters won primaries under the Labour Party. Their names were submitted to the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), yet they have moved to ZLP with no explanation,” Ndubueze explained, highlighting the disarray within the party following Otti’s actions.

The chairman also revealed that Governor Otti has been funding Labour Party operations through the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, suggesting an unhealthy dependence on state resources to control party affairs. This, according to Ndubueze, has further deepened the divide within the party as the funds was not enough to fund the activities of the party. However, this and many other issues has raised questions about the governor’s intentions toward the Labour Party.

The internal crisis in the Abia Labour Party comes on the heels of increasing tension within the state’s political landscape. Several reports, including allegations of mass defections from the Labour Party to the APC by prominent federal lawmakers, have added to the chaos. Many party loyalists fear that the divide between Governor Otti’s camp and the authentic Labour Party members could lead to an implosion within the party, further weakening its influence in the state.

In recent weeks, numerous LP members have expressed their determination to resist any attempts by Governor Otti to impose candidates through the ZLP, with some likening the situation to what transpired in Rivers State’s local government elections. Ndubueze and other party stalwarts have reiterated that they will not succumb to intimidation or pressure to abandon the Labour Party’s democratic processes.

With local government elections fast approaching, the unfolding drama within the Abia Labour Party may have significant implications for the political future of the state. Whether Governor Otti’s controversial moves will pay off or further alienate his base remains to be seen. However, for now, the internal crisis continues to deepen, with party members vowing to defend the Labour Party’s integrity.

As the situation develops, political observers will be closely watching how these dynamics unfold and what impact they will have on the broader political landscape in Abia State.
