Abuja – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially rescheduled its congresses in Abia and Ebonyi States, citing operational challenges as the reason for the delay. In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP leadership confirmed that the congresses will now take place on new dates, spanning from October 16 to October 23, 2024.

The letter, signed by the Acting National Chairman, H.E. Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum, and the National Secretary, Sen. Samuel N. Anyanwu, informed INEC of the party’s decision to postpone the congresses, which were originally scheduled for an earlier date. This communication follows a previous letter dated July 24, 2024, notifying INEC of the postponement due to unavoidable operational difficulties.

The rescheduled congresses are set to take place as follows:

 1. Ward Congresses: On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, the party will hold ward-level congresses in Abia and Ebonyi States, during which Ward Executive Committee members and three Ad-Hoc delegates will be elected.

 2. Local Government Congresses: The LGA congresses will be conducted on Saturday, October 19, 2024, focusing on the election of Local Government Exco members and National Delegates.

 3. State Congresses: The State Congresses to elect State Executive Officers have been scheduled for Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

These congresses play a critical role in determining the party’s leadership at the ward, local government, and state levels, with the elected officers contributing to shaping the party’s strategic direction ahead of future electoral contests.

In addition to the above, the PDP informed INEC that National Delegates to the party’s proposed Special National Convention will be elected during the scheduled LGA congresses. The exact date for the Special National Convention has not been announced, with the party stating that it will be held at a time of its choosing.

The rescheduling of the congresses is in compliance with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act of 2022 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which requires political parties to formally notify INEC of such events. The PDP assured the commission of its full adherence to all relevant electoral guidelines and thanked INEC for its continued cooperation.

The PDP stated that this notification serves to ensure that the commission is fully informed and that all necessary actions are taken in accordance with the law.

The rescheduled congresses are a crucial part of the PDP’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its internal democracy. The elections at the ward, LGA, and state levels will be instrumental in solidifying the party’s leadership structures in Abia and Ebonyi States. The elections will provide an opportunity for the party to renew its leadership ranks and consolidate its position in preparation for future political contests.

In their letter, the party leadership also emphasized the importance of electing competent and experienced individuals who will lead the PDP at various levels. The party expressed confidence that the new dates will provide sufficient time for a smooth and efficient electoral process.

The outcome of these congresses is expected to significantly influence the political dynamics in Abia and Ebonyi States, especially with the upcoming elections on the horizon. The selection of local and state leaders during the congresses will likely have far-reaching implications for the PDP’s political fortunes in these two key southeastern states.

The election of National Delegates during the LGA congresses will also play a pivotal role in shaping the outcomes of the party’s Special National Convention. The convention is expected to be a key moment for the party to recalibrate its strategy and address pressing political issues ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As the PDP prepares for the upcoming congresses in Abia and Ebonyi States, party members, stakeholders, and the general public are urged to actively participate in the process. The party leadership reaffirmed its commitment to upholding transparency and internal democracy while navigating operational challenges that led to the initial postponement.

With the new dates now in place, the PDP looks forward to a successful and smooth congress season, laying the foundation for a stronger and more united party structure across both states.
