Ohafia, Abia State – The Council of Ohafia Monarchs has placed a total ban on the business of “Akpakara” (condemned materials) in the entire Ohafia Ancient Kingdom. This decision was made in response to the alarming rise in vandalism and theft in the community, linked to the absence of electricity and increased criminal activities.
In a statement issued after a general meeting, the monarchs decried the high level of insecurity plaguing Ohafia communities.
According to the council, the surge in thefts, particularly involving the vandalization of electrical installations, public buildings, schools, and hospitals, has been exacerbated by the lack of electricity power in the region. Criminals have taken advantage of the darkness, disguising as condemned materials dealers (Nde Akpakara) to steal valuable assets, including transformers, cables, and other electrical components. These items are carted away under the guise of being condemned materials, while homes and public infrastructure suffer severe damage.
The council’s statement, signed by HRM Ezieogo Mba Odo Okereke, JP, the Secretary-General of the Council of Ohafia Monarchs, emphasized the destructive impact these activities have had on both public and private properties. In view of the rampant vandalism and wanton destruction, the council declared an immediate and total ban on the Akpakara business within the kingdom. Individuals involved in dealing, buying, or picking condemned materials will henceforth be treated as thieves.
“This decision has been taken to safeguard our community from further losses. Anyone caught engaging in Akpakara business will face the full wrath of the law, both traditional and constitutional, without fear or favour,” the statement reads.
The council also urged the communities to immediately enforce the ban using local instruments like Akpan and Ogele to announce the resolution.
This firm stance by the Council of Ohafia Monarchs is aimed at curbing the increasing criminal activities threatening the safety and security of the ancient kingdom, while also ensuring that the public infrastructure is preserved from further damage.
The monarchs concluded by stressing that there would be no leniency for offenders, as the protection of public and private properties remains paramount.
