Hon. Iheonunekwu Ugochukwu Collins, the lawmaker representing Isi Ala Ngwa North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has called for the proposed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, to be located in Aba, Abia State, to be renamed after the late Jaja Wachuku, a renowned national figure and one of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

In a statement directed to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Hon. Collins emphasized the historical significance of Jaja Wachuku, underscoring his instrumental role in Nigeria’s early political landscape and independence journey. Wachuku, who hailed from the Aba zone, served as the first Speaker of Nigeria’s First Republic House of Representatives, the country’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations, the first Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the first Senator from the Aba zone.

Hon. Collins argued that renaming the university after Jaja Wachuku would be a fitting tribute to his legacy, noting that such recognition would not only preserve the memory of a distinguished statesman but also address the feelings of marginalization among the people of the Aba zone. “Jaja Wachuku’s contributions to Nigeria’s political development cannot be overstated. His leadership on both national and international platforms paved the way for many of the freedoms and progress we enjoy today,” the lawmaker stated.

Furthermore, Hon. Collins believes that this move would reinforce the government’s acknowledgment of the Aba zone’s historical and political contributions to Nigeria, especially considering Wachuku’s deep roots in the area where the university is to be built. He added that such an honor would strengthen the connection between the local community and the federal institution, fostering a sense of pride and belonging.

The lawmaker expressed optimism that the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who is also from Abia State, would find the proposal compelling and act in favor of renaming the university after Jaja Wachuku. “This is an opportunity for us to immortalize one of our greatest national heroes in a manner that is not only symbolic but also meaningful to the people of Abia and Nigeria at large,” Hon. Collins concluded.

The proposed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages is part of ongoing efforts by the federal government to promote linguistic and cultural diversity in Nigeria. However, with Hon. Collins’ proposal gaining traction, there may be a shift in the narrative surrounding its eventual naming, as stakeholders continue to deliberate on the best way to honor historical figures in the country.
