The Chairman of the House Committee on Public Service in the Abia State House of Assembly (ABHA), Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr, has extended his felicitations to Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s 64th Independence Day celebration.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, George Egejuru, and made available to journalists today, the lawmaker representing Obingwa-West State constituency congratulated Nigerians on this milestone, acknowledging their resilience in sustaining democracy despite prevailing challenges.
Erondu Jnr, a former Special Adviser to the immediate past Governor of Abia State, lamented the severe economic hardship currently facing the nation. Citing World Bank reports, he noted that sluggish economic growth and rising inflation in Africa’s largest economy have pushed an additional 24 million Nigerians into poverty over the past five years.
He pointed out that the number of people living in poverty has risen from 79 million in 2018 to 104 million in 2023, with urban poor—more vulnerable to inflation—increasing from 13 million to 20 million. The rural poor population, he added, also surged from 67 million to 84 million. He described these figures as alarming and a significant threat to societal stability.
Erondu Jnr called for collaborative efforts from leaders at all levels to address these pressing issues, urging Nigerians to demonstrate greater resilience in the face of ongoing economic difficulties.
The former chairman of Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) also emphasized the importance of peaceful co-existence among Nigerians, regardless of religion or ethnicity, stressing that the country's diversity should be seen as a source of strength rather than division.
Expressing optimism, Erondu Jnr stated that Nigeria has the potential for greatness if it properly harnesses its abundant natural and human resources. He urged Nigerians not to lose hope but to continue praying for the country and its leaders, affirming that brighter days lie ahead.
Concluding his message, Erondu Jnr appealed to citizens to avoid social vices and extended his best wishes for a joyous Independence Day celebration.
