The Abia State Liaison Office, located off Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja, has been sealed off by the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) following a court order. This action stems from unpaid environmental taxes under the administration of Governor Alex Otti.

The order, issued by the Senior Magistrate Mobile Court of the FCT presided over by His Worship, Nweke Chukwuemeka Umeadi, authorized the sealing of the Abia State Liaison Office after the office failed to comply with directives related to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) Act. Specifically, the office was accused of defaulting in the payment of waste disposal bills as required by Section 30(4) & (5) of the AEPB Act and the corresponding Waste Management Rates (Charges) Regulations, 2012.

The legal proceedings revealed that the defendant, representing the Abia State government, had been summoned to court on September 2, 2024, but failed to appear. This absence prompted the court to issue a sealing order, barring tenants and visitors from accessing the premises.

The situation took a dramatic turn when fierce-looking mobile police officers enforced the court order, preventing tenants, visitors, and other individuals who came to transact business at the Liaison Office from entering the facility. This action left many frustrated and embarrassed.

In response, tenants leasing space within the premises have threatened to sue the Abia State government for the public humiliation they endured as a result of the closure. The tenants expressed disappointment that the government’s failure to resolve the tax issues led to this unfortunate scenario, impacting their businesses and activities.

As of now, the case has been adjourned until October 20, 2024, for further hearing, with the court awaiting the appearance of the Abia State government representatives to address the unresolved tax issues.

The sealing of the Liaison Office highlights the challenges the Otti-led administration faces in managing its relations with the FCTA, other agencies as well as fulfilling its financial and regulatory obligations. The public awaits further developments as the court proceedings continue.

This report brings to light the consequences of unpaid environmental taxes and how it impacts government operations, businesses, and public services. The tense atmosphere surrounding the Liaison Office underscores the urgent need for the Abia State government to address these issues before further legal actions occur.
