The national leadership of the Labour Party has disowned the outcome of today’s extended stakeholders’ meeting held in Umuahia, Abia State, convened by Governor Alex Otti.

In a statement signed by Mr. Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, the party described the meeting’s outcome as illegal and unenforceable. The press release, titled “Labour Party Disowns Outcome of Umuahia Stakeholders’ Meeting Summoned by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti. The Meeting is Illegal and Unconstitutional,” emphasized that the expanded stakeholders’ meeting was unconstitutional and stands null and void.

The statement partly reads: “As clearly stated in our previous communications, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and all others who have gathered in Umuahia lack the authority, under the Party Constitution, the Electoral Act, and even the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to convene any meeting of the Party. Furthermore, an expanded stakeholders’ meeting is not recognized as an organ under the Party Constitution.”

The statement cited the Labour Party Constitution, stating: “Article 11 of our Party Constitution (2024, 2019, and 2009 versions) provides: ‘There shall be four (4) levels of Party Organizations, namely: Ward, Local Government Area, State, and National.’”

Additionally, Article 12 outlines the principal organs of the party, which include the National Convention, National Executive Council, National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, State Congress, State Executive Council, State Working Committee, Local Government Congress, Local Government Area Council, Local Government Area Working Committee, Ward Congress, and Ward Executive Council.

“The combined reading of these provisions makes it clear that the so-called meeting in Umuahia is a charade and a waste of the resources and time of Abia citizens,” the statement continued.

It further criticized the premise on which Governor Otti convened the meeting, describing it as faulty and mischievous.

“Government business is conducted through formal communication and official correspondence, not verbal exchanges. As of now, there has been no communication from INEC to the Party regarding any objection to the conduct of the National Convention. We challenge Alex Otti to present an official letter from INEC on the matter. There is no leadership vacuum within the Party,” the statement asserted.

The party also condemned the establishment of a caretaker committee by Governor Otti, stating it had no constitutional basis within the Labour Party.

“The so-called caretaker committee created by the Governor of Abia State is nothing more than an extension of the Abia State Government House. We are particularly shocked to note that the purported chairman of this caretaker committee is not even a registered member of the Party but appeared during Peter Obi’s presidential campaign to assist in his efforts,” the statement concluded.
