The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah has officially commissioned and renamed the well-known Obinagu Road in Abakpa Nike, Enugu, in honor of Gentleman Mike Ejeagha.

The road, which leads to the residence of the legendary musician, was rebuilt earlier in the year in recognition of his contributions to the state's cultural heritage.

This was made known in a statement shared on Facebook by the state governor, Peter Mbah,  on Monday.

The statement said, "It was a pleasure to visit our living legend, Mike Ejeagha, and to commission four newly constructed and reconstructed roads in Abakpa Nike.

"In recognition of Mike Ejeagha’s immense contributions to the cultural heritage of Enugu State, we have renamed Obinagu Road, leading to his residence and reconstructed earlier in the year, to Mike Ejeagha Road.

"Enugu is a state rich in history, talent, and culture. It is our duty to honour and celebrate those who have shaped our identity.  Today, our government extends full support to Mike Ejeagha, taking responsibility for his upkeep as part of our commitment to preserving the legacies of our indigenous legends.

"To the residents of Abakpa and Enugu State, we assure you that this is just the beginning. We have recently awarded contracts for the construction of 141 roads and 20 rural roads, and Abakpa is certainly included.

"Very soon, we will commence the dualisation of Penocks Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Road, extending all the way to Opi-Nsukka. The contract has been awarded, and work will commence shortly. Our commitment to transforming Enugu State is unwavering, with many more roads and projects underway to enhance the lives of our people. Tomorrow Is Here!"

The legendary folklorist and songwriter, often referred to as the "Storyteller of the East," has been a cornerstone of Igbo cultural heritage for decades.

Governor Mbah, recognizing Ejeagha's invaluable contributions to the preservation of Igbo folklore and music, also announced that his administration would assume full responsibility for the elder statesman’s welfare.

Mike Ejeagha has recently found himself back in the spotlight, thanks to a viral social media video by Nigerian skitmaker Brain Jotter, which featured Ejeagha’s iconic "Gwo Gwo" song. The video has rekindled global interest in Ejeagha’s work, introducing his timeless melodies to a new generation.

In a move that delighted the audience, Governor Mbah joined in performing the viral "Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo" dance, a gesture that not only honored Ejeagha but also underscored the cultural significance of his music. The crowd erupted in applause, witnessing a memorable moment that celebrated both tradition and the living legends who keep it alive.
