Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State was escorted out of the premises of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin City early Sunday morning following a confrontation involving members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. when Obaseki was found at the INEC office.

Tensions flared as APC members, led by the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Dennis Idahosa, vocally protested Obaseki’s presence.

Idahosa argued that the governor had no legitimate reason to be at the electoral body’s premises, as he was not an INEC staff member.

"Obaseki must come out. He is not supposed to be here. Nigeria Police should not compromise," Idahosa shouted.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba intervened, and Obaseki was escorted out of the premises by police officers, ending the standoff.

The reasons for the governor's early morning visit to the INEC office remain unclear, but the APC has expressed concerns over potential undue influence in the electoral process.

Meanwhile, INEC has uploaded 98.23% of the results from the polling units on the IREV portal.
