Abia Financial Statement: Time to Cut the Waste By Munachim Offor | #NwokeukwuMascot

I spent yesterday and the better part of today gleaning through the Abia State 2023 Financial report, published on our state's website.
I will start by applauding the government of Dr. Alex Otti for continuing the tradition of publicly publishing the state's financial report.
The essence of opening the books of the state is to promote transparency and accountability in public spending.
It will therefore be remiss for citizens to fail to utilize the opportunity to interrogate government spending and ask for clarity where it is needed.
Citizens must feel free to ask questions and the government reserves the duty to provide answers to the people on whose behalf they hold and exercise power.
That said, let's turn our attention to the report.
The total cost of running government stood at 24 billion naira in 2023, out of which the office of the governor gulped 74% or 17.8 billion naira.
1.4 billion naira was spent on local travels and training, while foreign trips took 533 million naira. Unacceptable!
Foodstuff/Catering materials supplies gulped 590 million naira, while another 595 million naira was spent on refreshments and meal. Outrageous!
409 million naira was spent on fuelling motor vehicles. 195 million naira was spent on publicity and announcements. Ridiculous!
115 million naira was spent to maintain plants and generators, while maintenance of vehicles cost 190 million naira. Unbelievable!
A whopping 10.8 billion naira was spent on security votes and another 893 million naira was expended on security services. Scandalous!
Given the economic hardship and hunger in the land it is indefensible and grossly insensitive for any government to spend these humongous sums for items listed above.
Even as a diehard supporter of Dr. Otti, I cannot in good conscience support the spending of 3.2 million naira daily on refreshments or foodstuffs.
It is time to cut the waste. In the same year, only 36 million was spent on gratuity and 3.8 billion on pension.
While my support for the governor remains, my commitment to Abia and Abians is preeminent and supersedes any other interest and where both clash, the patriot in me will revolt. Stop the waste now!
