The Abia Pensioners' Forum, a pressure group within the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), has rejected a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between the state government and the NUP leadership, which mandates pensioners to forfeit their gratuities and a portion of their pension arrears.

The pensioners are demanding full payment of all outstanding pension arrears and gratuities, emphasizing their refusal to accept any compromise.

During a press conference in Umuahia, the group’s coordinator, Okey Kanu, claimed that pensioners had been shortchanged in the calculation and payment of arrears owed by previous administrations. While acknowledging Governor Alex Otti’s efforts to address debts inherited from his predecessors, they urged him to ensure the complete settlement of their entitlements rather than partial payments.

The forum criticized both the state government and the NUP leadership for what they described as the secretive handling of the MoA.

They questioned why the government would negotiate terms with vulnerable pensioners, who have endured years of deprivation. The group called on Governor Otti to annul the MoA and restore the full payment of their outstanding pension arrears and gratuities.

In response, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, described the pensioners' stance as unjust, accusing the splinter group of attempting to blackmail the government instead of expressing gratitude for its efforts. He maintained that the payments made were “full and final,” while assuring that the government remained open to further discussions with pensioners, but only through their recognized leadership, not breakaway factions.
