As the local government elections approach in Abia State, rumors and permutations are rife. A prime example is the race in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, where three individuals have expressed interest in becoming the mayor. Among the contenders are two familiar faces and a newcomer, all eager to steer the course of the local government. Let's examine the three aspirants and what they bring to the table:
Hon. CY Nwankwo:
Hon. CY Nwankwo is the current Mayor of Isiala Ngwa North. A business mogul and philanthropist, Nwankwo has supported the underprivileged in Isiala Ngwa North through his CY Nwankwo Foundation. Residing abroad, he has been actively involved in politics since the era of Governor T.A. Orji.
Nwankwo is believed to have the governor’s endorsement and substantial financial backing to continue as mayor.

He reportedly enjoys the support of members of the Abia Arise Structure, associated with the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti. However, a potential obstacle to his re-election is his rivalry with Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the representative of Isiala Ngwa North and South, over who holds sway in Isiala Ngwa North. This face-off could impact his chances, as Onwusibe is deeply rooted in the grassroots.
Amb. Innocent Chiedozie Uruakpa:
Innocent is a young, vibrant businessman who previously ran for the Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency seat in the Abia State House of Assembly but lost to Hon. Iheonunekwu Collins Ugochukwu (OCHAKE) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). After contesting under the Labour Party and failing, he now seeks the mayoral seat as compensation.

He claims to have the backing of Mr. Alex Alozie, Pastor Caleb Ajagba (Chief of Staff to the Governor), Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, and the Otawike group. Addressing his supporters, Innocent emphasized his financial support for Hon. Ginger Onwusibe's Otawike structure since 2021.
Engr. Cyril Ishmael:

In response to critics labeling him a newcomer, he reaffirmed his commitment to helping the most vulnerable, underscoring his belief that “we are blessed to be a blessing.” Known for his philanthropic efforts, including building houses, funding scholarships, and organizing medical outreaches and business start-ups, Cyril has garnered organic support. However, his independence could be a disadvantage, as the lack of a political “godfather” is often seen as a hurdle in Nigerian politics.
The days ahead promise to be intriguing as the people of Isiala Ngwa North choose their leader. A fair and transparent primary process, free of imposed candidates, will be crucial in determining who ultimately wears the cap.
