Manuel Neuer Becomes Fourth German Player to Retire from International Football Since Euro 2024 | #NwokeukwuMascot
Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has officially announced his retirement from international football following Euro 2024. Neuer, who has earned 124 caps for the national team, is stepping away from international duty, joining Ilkay Gundogan, Thomas Muller, and Toni Kroos, who have also retired since this summer’s tournament. Germany reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 before being eliminated by eventual champions Spain.
In a heartfelt video posted on Instagram, Neuer stated, "Everyone who knows me understands that this decision was not easy. I feel physically fit, and the prospect of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico was very appealing.
However, I am convinced that now is the right moment to take this step and focus entirely on FC Bayern Munich. It has been an incredible journey that has shaped me, and I am very proud of it. Winning the World Cup in 2014 and the special atmosphere during this year's European Championship at home are highlights for which I am deeply grateful. It has been an honor to captain our national team until 2023. I loved wearing the jersey of the German national team."
Neuer’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious chapter in German football. He is celebrated for his pivotal role in the 2014 World Cup victory and is widely regarded as the archetypal sweeper-keeper. With Neuer’s departure, coach Julian Nagelsmann will need to identify a new number one.

Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen, who has served as a backup for years, is a strong candidate, while Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann, also part of Nagelsmann’s Euro 2024 squad, could be considered.
Neuer will continue his club career with Bayern Munich, aiming to secure silverware under new manager Vincent Kompany after a trophyless season. Meanwhile, Nagelsmann will be tasked with rebuilding the German team following the retirement of four key players. Germany will return to action in September with Nations League fixtures against Hungary and the Netherlands.
