Nigerian singer Chinedu Okoli, better known by his stage name Flavour N’abania, recently shared insights into his journey to musical stardom, revealing a pivotal moment when he was asked to leave the stage to make way for the popular Nigerian music duo, PSquare.
Flavour recounted this experience in a recent interview on the In My Opinion podcast, released on Sunday, where he discussed the challenges of his early career.
He said, “Things started changing when I began seeing other artists. After leaving the band, I hit the streets, and that’s when the game got tough. Before that, I was in a good place—music had structure and procedures—but now I was out there on my own.
“I remember one day when PSquare was promoting their Temptation album. The promoters brought them to a venue called City Centre in Enugu, where I had built a solid fan base. Every weekend, the place was packed—no matter what else was going on in Enugu, my spot was always buzzing.
“So the promoters brought in PSquare to promote their show. I was performing when they arrived, and immediately, their manager said, ‘Hello, stop that.’ I switched off the device, passed the microphone, and stepped aside. The moment PSquare took the stage, the crowd, especially the girls, went wild.
“Then Paul grabbed the microphone and sang Temptation. When they finished, the manager asked me to continue, but I was shaken.”
Reflecting further, Flavour explained that the experience made him realize the importance of developing his unique sound and evolving from a mere musician into a true artist.

“So I thought, ‘It’s the same music we’re doing, but I’ve never seen a reaction like this.’ I was just cold, watching. When they left, the manager told me to carry on,” he added.
“That’s when it hit me—the difference is that these guys create their sound, go to the studio, and record. That’s how it’s done. I was just a music man.
“That’s when I decided to transform from being a music man to an artist. But it was harder than I imagined. I could play, I could sing, but creating my own sound? Where do you even begin? The best way to approach it was to start from scratch.”
