In a dramatic political development, Rivers State Governor Sir Sim Fubara is reportedly on the verge of leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Action People’s Party (APP). This potential move comes amid escalating tensions with his predecessor, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, following a contentious fallout that began in October of the previous year.


Sources close to the governor indicate that Fubara has completed arrangements for the party switch, signaling a significant realignment in Rivers State’s political landscape.


This anticipated defection has been closely linked to recent upgrades at the APP’s state party secretariat in Port Harcourt, a move widely seen as preparation for the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024. The APP is strategically positioning itself to contest all 23 local government chairmanships in the state.


Governor Fubara’s decision to abandon the PDP, where he no longer wields significant influence, highlights his quest for a new political stronghold.

This follows a previously considered move to the Labour Party, which was ultimately abandoned after Labour Party’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Beatrice Itubo, paid a visit to FCT Minister and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja. The visit incited a backlash on social media, casting doubts on Itubo’s loyalty and integrity, especially in light of her earlier endorsement of Fubara.


In the wake of these developments, Fubara’s media team and supporters have been actively promoting APP activities, including the extensive renovations at the party’s Port Harcourt secretariat. On July 8, 2024, the APP extended an invitation to Fubara’s supporters, offering them opportunities to participate in the local government elections under its banner. Additionally, the party has announced free nomination forms for women and youth candidates, further underscoring its commitment to inclusivity.

Amidst these shifts, there are claims that the Rivers State Government may be behind the substantial renovations at the APP secretariat, hinting at a complex web of political maneuvering.



Governor Fubara is expected to make a formal announcement of his defection to the APP by late August or early September, a move that could reshape the political dynamics ahead of the local government elections.
