Aba, Abia State – In a disturbing incident that has sparked fear and confusion in the commercial hub of Aba, Abia State, police officers reportedly exchanged gunfire after allegedly mistaking each other for members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The incident, which occurred on Wednesday in the Alaoji area of the city, has left one civilian dead and raised concerns about security and coordination among law enforcement agencies in the region.
According to sources, the shootout involved two police patrol teams – one from the Aba Area Command and another from Umuahia, the state capital. The Umuahia team, operating in commercial buses, was allegedly mistaken for IPOB members by their colleagues from Aba, leading to the tragic exchange of fire.
The incident caused panic in the bustling Alaoji Motor Spare Parts Market, located along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway. As gunshots rang out, shop owners and passersby scrambled for cover, fearing for their lives. Tragically, a truck driver was caught in the crossfire and killed by a stray bullet.
The situation reportedly escalated further when the officers realized they were firing at fellow law enforcement agents. An altercation ensued, highlighting the tense atmosphere and the potential for miscommunication in high-pressure situations.
In response to the incident, the police spokesperson for Abia State, Assistant Superintendent of Police Maureen Chinaka, issued a statement on Thursday acknowledging the shooting but downplaying the initial reports of mistaken identity.
"From our preliminary investigation, there is no credible evidence to suggest that police officers mistook themselves for members of IPOB and fired at each other," she said. "What we can confirm is that there was a shooting in that area, which resulted in the death of a civilian."
Ms. Chinaka urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. The police have assured the public that they are committed to uncovering the truth behind the unfortunate event and ensuring that such incidents do not occur in the future.
The incident has raised serious questions about the coordination and communication among security forces in Abia State, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions with IPOB in the region. The public remains on edge as they await the outcome of the police investigation.
