Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been released from incarceration after serving a six-month sentence for currency abuse. The social media celebrity was greeted by a throng of supporters upon his release on Monday morning, as seen in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter).
In his first comments to the media post-release, Bobrisky advised Nigerians to adhere strictly to the country's laws and respect the Naira, emphasizing that even seemingly minor infractions can lead to severe consequences. He particularly warned against the practice of spraying money at events, which led to his own imprisonment.
"You have to follow the rules and abide by the laws. Don’t spray money, or you will become a landlord in Kirikiri," Bobrisky stated, referencing the notorious Lagos prison. "It is not just about violent crimes or any criminal activity that can land you in prison. Something as seemingly trivial as misusing the Naira can bring legal trouble."
Bobrisky also took the opportunity to express gratitude towards those who supported him during his time in prison. "I’m only focusing on my good energy right now on people who were there for me, like my friends. Any other person, I’m not interested. I’m really grateful to my friends and loved ones," he said.
In April, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Bobrisky without the option of a fine, underscoring the court's stance on currency abuse. The sentence was intended as a deterrent to others who might misuse the Naira.
Reactions to Bobrisky’s release have been varied on social media. Some users expressed skepticism and amusement, while others criticized the legal system's handling of the case. User @toolzmoney questioned the reality of Bobrisky's imprisonment, saying, “Bobrisky after finally regaining his freedom. Una sure say this guy go prison??”
In contrast, @OloriSupergal welcomed Bobrisky’s return with enthusiasm: “Bobrisky aka Mummy of Laygurrrrrrsssss is back!!!!” Meanwhile, @ChiomaChuka highlighted perceived inconsistencies in the enforcement of currency abuse laws, pointing out the lack of action against other prominent figures who have been filmed misusing the Naira.
The discourse surrounding Bobrisky’s case continues to spark debate, reflecting broader concerns about the fairness and application of legal standards in Nigeria.
