The controversy surrounding the anti-party activities of the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, continues to escalate. A pro-democracy youth group within the Abia PDP, the Action Youths for Democracy, has publicly urged him to cease his efforts to undermine the PDP in both Abia State and across Nigeria.
The youth group’s statement follows a highly controversial comment by Wabara, in which he endorsed Abia Governor Alex Otti for a second term in the 2027 gubernatorial contest.
Speaking to journalists recently, the group's spokesperson, Chief Ude Njoku Ukwen, expressed concern over Wabara's public declaration that Governor Otti had already secured a second term. He emphasized that Wabara’s remarks raised significant questions about his intentions and loyalty to the party.
Wabara's statement has drawn sharp criticism from many quarters, both within and outside the PDP. Critics argue that such a statement, especially from a high-ranking PDP official, was not only premature but also detrimental to the reputation and stability of the Abia PDP.
Adding to the chorus of disapproval, FCT Minister Mr. Nyesom Wike recently criticized Wabara for his "unguarded and irresponsible" comments, urging him to refrain from further actions that could tarnish the PDP's image.
Notably, Governor Otti had not yet completed his first year in office when Wabara endorsed him for a second term—an endorsement that many PDP members believe sends a troubling message about the party's electoral value.
Statements like Wabara's could create a perception of entitlement rather than meritocracy within Abia State.
Adding to the controversy, allegations have surfaced that Wabara is receiving financial support from Governor Otti to facilitate actions that could destabilize the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
These accusations are based on reports that Wabara, along with his associates, received N50 million from Governor Otti during Wabara's birthday anniversary, an event hosted by the PDP in Abia State. This action has been likened to "sleeping with the enemy," and it is evident that accepting such a monetary gift is nothing more than an inducement by the LP government to destabilize the PDP. This is particularly alarming given that the person expected to lead and protect the PDP at the highest level is at the center of this controversial episode.
Wabara's actions have raised concerns about the risks of his association with the LP and have cast doubt on his credibility and integrity as the PDP BoT Chair.
It is also worth noting that during his tenure as Senate President under President Olusegun Obasanjo, Wabara failed to attract any significant federal infrastructure projects to his village, local government area, or the broader Abia South senatorial zone. His tenure was marked by a lack of development, leading to dissatisfaction among his constituents who had expected more from their representative.
In light of these developments, party members are being called upon to engage all stakeholders in dialogue and honest discussions to repair the damage done to the party by Wabara's callous statements and actions. PDP stakeholders are demanding accountability, responsibility, and responsiveness from Wabara and are urging him to step aside as the Chairman of the PDP BoT, as he has clearly demonstrated his inability to lead the party into the future.
