The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed concern over the University of Calabar's inclusion of a bread seller on its graduation list for the mandatory one-year national service.
In response, the NYSC has demobilized 54 graduates from the university who were illegally mobilized, to prevent the issuance of certificates to unqualified individuals.
According to a statement from the NYSC's Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, revealed this in Abuja on Friday. He added that the individuals involved in this issue would face legal action.
Of the 54 graduates initially registered for mobilization, 19 were prevented from serving, and four certificates were not issued by the NYSC.
“The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar came here to report that she observed some names appeared on the institution’s list and they ought not to have been there. She checked the list the school gave us and I told her that their certificates would be invalidated. I give kudos to the Vice-Chancellor.
“Previously, a bread seller was mobilised on the graduation list from the same institution, there are bad eggs in many places that generate matriculation numbers and courses for their candidates”, the DG said.
He further noted that in the past, a bread seller had been mobilized from the same institution, highlighting issues with the generation of matriculation numbers and course assignments.
The NYSC plans to strengthen its collaboration with Corps Producing Institutions and relevant stakeholders to address this issue. Ahmed emphasized that any lapses in the mobilization process reflect on the integrity of the institution’s management, stating, “Those responsible for entering graduate data should be people of integrity.”
He urged employers nationwide to verify the authenticity of NYSC Certificates of National Service presented for job placements.
Earlier on Monday, the NYSC had invalidated the certificates of 101 illegally mobilized graduates from UNICAL who had participated in the scheme between 2021 and 2023. Following this action, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, DIG Udom Ekpoudom (retd.), praised the NYSC for uncovering fraudulent mobilizations and pledged to address the involvement of staff in this misconduct.
