Nigerian electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured that it is fully prepared to conduct a free, fair, and credible governorship election in Edo State on September 21.

Sam Olumekun, the INEC Commissioner for Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), made this declaration at a media engagement in Benin, emphasising the commission's commitment to a transparent and unbiased electoral process.

"INEC is committed to conducting free, fair, and credible governorship election in Edo State and we rely on your (journalists’) partnership to achieve this goal,” he said.

Represented by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC National Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Olumekun highlighted the significant reforms introduced by the Electoral Act to enhance the credibility of elections in Nigeria.

He emphasised the crucial role of journalists in holding all stakeholders, including INEC, accountable and ensuring transparency throughout the electoral process.

Olumekun encouraged journalists to familiarise themselves with the legal framework governing elections to provide informed coverage and educate the public on the electoral process.

Additionally, he urged journalists to refrain from publishing or broadcasting information that could incite violence, spread hate speech, or promote fake news.

Olumekun also reminded eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in person across the 192 wards in Edo State, warning that PVC collection is strictly by individual and not by proxy.
