Tracka, the public expenditure tracking platform operated by BudgIt, has unveiled troubling discrepancies regarding the Ogwumabiri Road project in Abia State.

Originally funded with N34.7 million, the project was purported to involve the construction of a 5-kilometer road in Umunneochi Local Government Area. However, Tracka’s findings reveal that the actual work completed was a mere 500-meter stretch in Ugwamabiri, a village within the Obinolu community.

Despite the project being officially completed and asphalted early last year, Tracka reports that the road is already exhibiting signs of significant deterioration.

“Despite the substantial financial allocation, the road is deteriorating prematurely and showing signs of poor quality,” the platform stated on its official X handle.

Tracka has urged the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the project and to ensure that the contractor addresses the apparent deficiencies in the construction.

“Our observations during the site visit revealed that the road was already washing off,” Tracka added, highlighting concerns about the longevity and quality of the infrastructure.

The call for accountability and corrective action underscores the need for rigorous oversight in public construction projects to ensure taxpayer funds are utilized effectively and to prevent premature infrastructure failures.
