In a significant political development, the South-East Governors Forum has announced plans to engage with the Nigerian government to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The decision followed a comprehensive six-hour meeting at the Enugu State Government House on Tuesday.

All five governors from the region—Peter Mbah (Enugu), Alex Otti (Abia), Prof. Charles Soludo (Anambra), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), and Senator Hope Uzodimma (Imo)—participated in the meeting and signed a five-point communiqué outlining their resolutions.

The communiqué highlighted several critical resolutions:

1.) Engagement with the Federal Government: The governors resolved to visit President Bola Tinubu to discuss pressing issues affecting the South-East region, including the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

2.) Implementation of Security and Economic Plans: The forum agreed to implement the recommendations from the South-East Security and Economic Summit held in Owerri on September 28, 2023. This includes actionable plans to address security challenges and promote economic integration within the region.

3.) Commiseration on the Demise of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu: The forum expressed condolences to the governments and people of Abia State, Ebonyi State, Imo State, and the family of the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, a former governor and Minister of Science, Innovation, and Technology.

4.) Solidarity Visit from Prominent Leaders: The forum received a delegation led by former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, who visited to show solidarity with the governors' efforts.

In honor of the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the forum established a burial committee chaired by Anyim Pius Anyim, with former Minister of Transportation and Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, serving as the committee's secretary. This committee will oversee the arrangements for the former governor's funeral.

The South-East Governors Forum's proactive stance on these issues underscores their commitment to addressing the region's challenges and fostering unity and progress. The planned meeting with President Tinubu marks a significant step towards achieving their goals and securing a more stable and prosperous future for the South-East region.
