Yola, Adamawa State — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured a decisive victory, winning all 21 council seats in the recently concluded Local Government (LG) election in Adamawa State. This election marks a significant milestone as the first local government poll conducted following the Supreme Court's ruling granting financial autonomy to the third tier of government.
According to the State Independent Electoral Commission, the PDP swept all councillorship seats in the state's 226 wards, with the exception of Demsa Ward in Demsa Local Government Area, where the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) claimed one councillorship seat.
Announcing the results on Sunday evening at the commission's headquarters in Yola, Mohammed Umar, Chairman of the Electoral Commission, stated that the ruling PDP won overwhelmingly across all 21 local government councils. Umar noted that out of the 19 registered political parties in the state, 12 participated in the election.
The Adamawa local government election gained particular significance as it was the first to be held after the Supreme Court's landmark decision to grant financial autonomy to local governments. The court's ruling mandated the Federal Government to pay the 20.60% monthly allocation directly to the 774 LGs' exclusive accounts, bypassing state governors' control. Additionally, the Supreme Court barred governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils, further strengthening local governance.
This victory for the PDP highlights the party's strong foothold in Adamawa State and sets a new precedent for local government elections in Nigeria following the judiciary's push for enhanced local government autonomy.
