Bill for the Creation of Aba State Advances in House of Representatives | #NwokeukwuMascot
Hon Ginger Onwusibe |
In a significant legislative move, the House of Representatives has taken a crucial step towards the creation of Aba State. The bill, championed by Hon. Ginger Onwusibe and three other lawmakers, successfully passed its first reading today.
If enacted, this legislation will increase the number of states in Nigeria's South East Region to six, thereby achieving parity with other geopolitical zones in the country, which currently have more than six states.
The proposed Aba State, as detailed in the bill sponsored by Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, Hon. Munachim Alozie, Hon. Chris Nkwonta, and Hon. Ifeanyi Ikwechegh, would encompass nine local government areas. These include Aba North, Aba South, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Obingwa, Osisioma Ngwa, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, and Ukwa West LGAs.
Proponents of the bill argue that the creation of Aba State will spur significant development in South Eastern Nigeria. They emphasize that this new state would not only facilitate the emergence of new mega cities but also enhance commerce and industrial activities, benefiting the entire nation.
The passage of this bill marks an important milestone in the legislative process, with subsequent readings and potential debates expected to follow as it progresses through the House.
