The Abia State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly stated that its scheduled congresses will proceed as planned, despite a lawsuit filed against them in the Bende Local Government Area High Court.

The lawsuit, numbered HB/3/2024, was filed by Francis Etuzu, Chidindu Kalu Kalu, and Enyinnaya Ogbu. The plaintiffs have requested the court to halt the planned ward and local government congresses scheduled for the coming weekend and to prevent the party from extending the tenure of current office holders.

In a statement signed by Elder Abraham Amah, the Vice Chairman and Acting State Publicity Secretary of the Abia PDP, the party reassured its stakeholders and members that a meeting was convened to address the issue. The legal team has been instructed to review and respond to the lawsuit.

The statement, titled "Dismissive Restraining Order on the Conduct of Abia PDP Ward Congress," asserts that the planned congresses will proceed in strict accordance with the law.

"The leadership of the Abia PDP wishes to inform all stakeholders and members that the State Working Committee (SWC) convened an emergency meeting to address the recent restraining order obtained by certain individuals who had previously resigned from the party prior to the 2023 general elections," the statement reads.

"During this critical meeting, we unanimously agreed to activate our legal department to take appropriate and decisive actions against this unjust restraining order. We want to reassure all party members that we are fully committed to defending the integrity of our party and ensuring that our democratic processes remain unimpeded."

The Abia PDP called on its members to stay united and steadfast in the face of these challenges. "We urge every member to remain steadfast and united as we embark on this journey to confront those elements who seek to undermine the PDP. It is time to expose the common enemies of our party, and we will not back down from this fight."

The statement emphasized that the congresses will continue unabated, in full compliance with existing laws and the rule of law. “Furthermore, we want to emphasize that our congress will continue unabated, in strict compliance with extant laws and with total adherence to the rule of law. The strength of the PDP lies in our unity, resilience, and collective vision for a prosperous Abia State and Nigeria.

"We appreciate your continued support and dedication to the principles and values of the Abia PDP. Together, we will overcome these challenges and emerge stronger. PDP: Power to the People!" the statement concluded.

The Abia PDP's resolve to proceed with its congresses underscores its commitment to democratic processes and internal party integrity, signaling its readiness to address legal challenges head-on.
