Ngwa Rangers has voiced strong criticism and concern over Governor Alex Otti’s recent decision to demolish the newly commissioned Government House complex in Ogurube Layout, Umuahia. This announcement, made on July 27, 2024, during a visit to Arochukwu Local Government, has sparked outrage among the Ukwa Ngwa people, represented by Kingsley Ihesiaba, the group’s Publicity Secretary.
The controversial decision involves the demolition of the Government House, a significant project initially undertaken by former Governor T.A. Orji and completed by former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on May 27, 2023. Ngwa Rangers has labeled this move as a stark example of misplaced priorities, particularly given the current economic difficulties faced by many Abians.
In a statement titled “Ngwa Rangers Condemns Governor Otti’s Prioritization of White Elephant Projects Over Citizens’ Welfare,” the group expressed its dismay over the Governor’s choice to focus on such an expensive and arguably unnecessary project instead of addressing pressing issues affecting the state’s residents. The statement critiques Governor Otti’s inconsistent rationale for his actions, initially presenting the demolition as a cost-saving measure before citing the Government Houses as dilapidated.
The statement reads. “We are shocked and disappointed by the Governor Alex Otti's recent announcement on Saturday, 27th July, 2024 in Arochukwu Local Government to demolish the newly commissioned Government House complex at Ogurube Layout, Umuahia. Governor Otti's plan to demolish the new Government House which was started by former Governor T.A. Orji and completed by former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on 27th May, 2023 is a stark reminder of his misplaced priorities.
“At a time when many Abia citizens are struggling to make ends meet due to economic hardship, it is unconscionable for the Governor to embark on such a white elephant project. His inconsistent explanations for working from home, earlier citing cost-cutting measures and later claiming the Government Houses are dilapidated adds to our dismay.
“For how long will Governor Otti continue to show disdain and disregard for the welfare of his citizens? Abians are yet to understand why their Governor who only few days ago approved a whooping sum of 50M to each house member and just a paltry of 10M as constituency project fund not prefer that constituency projects be allocated double of what each legislator got for his personal welfare and now this issue of the demolition of public property that could be converted to various other uses in the event that the Governor intends to build a golden castle as his own government house.
“We urge Governor Otti to show empathy and prioritize the welfare of Abia citizens. Instead of indulging in white elephant projects, he should focus on addressing poverty, unemployment, and infrastructural decay. It is appalling that he could not pay the minimum wage of N30,000 and he is now pleading with the Labour Union to accept N40,000 out of the approved N70,000 National Minimum Wage, yet plans to waste billions to build a new Government House for himself, family and friends while Abians suffer in abject poverty.
“Furthermore, the ongoing demolition of the Abia State Governor's lodge in Abuja, as seen in a recent viral video, is a clear indication of the Governor's disregard for the welfare of Abia citizens.
“The people of Abia State need functional roads, health institutions, education systems, robust internal security, agricultural investment, job creation, wealth creation, and good packages for workers. Sadly, the Governor's own community in Isiala Ngwa South lacks basic amenities like functional healthcare, electricity, pipe-borne water, and more.

“We call on Governor Otti to reconsider his policies and actions which contradict his earlier promises and the people's expectations. His leadership should prioritize Abia citizens' needs, not personal interests or political expediency.
“We demand transparent, accountable leadership committed to Abia citizens' well-being. Anything less is unacceptable.” It concluded.
