Aba, Abia State - The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep sorrow and condemnation over the recent killing of two policemen at Opobo Junction, Aba, on June 28, 2024.
In a press statement signed by Elder Abraham Amah, Abia PDP Vice Chairman and Acting State Publicity Secretary, the party extended its condolences to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the state government, the people of Abia State, and the bereaved families.
Titled “ANOTHER SAD DAY FOR ABIA: PDP COMMISERATES WITH THE IGP, GOVERNMENT, AND PEOPLE OF ABIA STATE AND FAMILIES OF SLAIN POLICEMEN” The PDP called on Governor Alex Otti to overhaul the state's security strategies and enhance collaboration with relevant agencies to prevent further violence.
“The State Chairman of the Abia PDP, Rt. Hon. Alwell Asiforo Okere, on behalf of the State Working Committee, SWC, the enlarged State Executive Committee, SEC, and the entire Abia PDP family commiserates with the Inspector General of Police, IGP, the government and people of Abia State, and the families of the two policemen who were killed at Opobo Junction in Aba on Friday, June 28, 2024.
“That day was another sad day for Abia, and the news of the killing of the policemen by yet-to-be-identified people came to us as a rude shock, considering that Abia State is still dealing with the unpleasant consequences of the killing of soldiers at Obikabia Junction, also in Aba, barely a month ago. This is one killing that has become too many, and Abia PDP condemns this barbaric act in totality.
“This developing trend of killing security officers in Abia State is very dangerous, calls for a moment of solemn reflection for the government, and should not be treated as a political case study of blame games because it creates a lot of opportunities for the intelligence community to wrongly profile Abia State as a security flashpoint, despite the fact that Abia was the most peaceful state in the South East in the recent past.
“The government of Alex Otti should rejig its security architecture and ensure that it collaborates with relevant agencies to become more preventive in its approach to securing the lives and properties of Abians. This is the time for the government to take responsibility for its actions and inactions that have rendered Abia insecure and not a time to scapegoat anybody, because no amount of scapegoating will bring back the lives of the slain policemen and others who died either in the line of duty or those caught in the crossfires.
“The government should come down from its high horse, swallow its pride, and study, as well as apply the security template that made Abia the most peaceful state in the South East and one of the five most peaceful states in the country, as revealed by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, in its 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index, MPI, when measured against the security, education, health, and standard of living indices.”
In a broader appeal, the PDP reminded residents of their role in maintaining security. Additionally, the PDP called on the IGP to ensure that the families of the fallen policemen receive adequate support.
“We use this opportunity to remind Abians that security is everyone's business, and everyone should help the government and security agencies secure our lives and properties by remaining vigilant at all times and always reporting suspicious persons and movements to security agencies. We also call on our security agencies not to be deterred in their duties because of these ugly incidents.
“The Abia PDP calls on the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the families of the slain policemen are adequately taken care of by the police authorities and that their breadwinners, who paid the supreme price for fatherland, do not die in vain.”
In closing, the party extended heartfelt prayers to the families of the deceased. "And to the families of the slain policemen, we pray to the Almighty God to give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of their loved ones. May the good Lord accept the souls of the departed policemen in His bosom. " The statement concluded.
