In a tragic incident highlighting the dangers of religious extremism, an enraged mob in the picturesque Pakistani town of Swat has brutally killed a tourist accused of desecrating the Quran. The mob gunned down the man, dragged his body through the town, and hanged him in public view.
The incident occurred on Thursday night when Muhammad Ismail, a resident of Sialkot in Punjab province, was visiting the northwestern hill resort town of Swat.
Ismail was accused of burning pages of Islam’s holy book in Madyan Tehsil of Swat district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to reports from the Indian Express.
District Police Officer (DPO) Zahidullah stated that police initially took Ismail into custody and locked him up in the police station following the desecration allegation. However, announcements made from local mosques via loudspeakers prompted thousands to gather outside the police station.
The situation quickly escalated as the angry mob demanded the suspect be handed over to them. When the police refused, a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in eight people being injured. The mob then set the police station on fire, forcing the officers to flee.
"After storming the police station, the mob shot and killed Ismail, dragged his body to Madyan Ada, and hanged him publicly," DPO Zahidullah reported. The mob also torched police vehicles, exacerbating the chaos. Reinforcements were called in to control the mob and restore order in the popular tourist destination.
The incident has caused significant unrest in the hill town, prompting Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province Ali Amin Gandapur to demand a report from the provincial police chief. Gandapur has directed the Inspector General of Police to take immediate steps to control the situation and urged the public to remain calm.
This incident underscores the volatile intersection of religion and violence, posing a severe challenge to law enforcement and civil order in regions prone to extremism.
