The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that eight people were killed and 15 others injured in a suicide bombing incident in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. The tragic event occurred on June 29, 2024, at approximately 15:40 hours.
According to Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the attack involved a woman carrying a baby who detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at a busy motor park in Mararaba T-Junction, Gwoza town. The explosion claimed the lives of the woman, her baby, and six others. Fifteen individuals who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at General Hospital Gwoza.
Earlier reports indicated that a Nigerian Army soldier was among those killed when two suicide bombers detonated IEDs. The initial attack took place at a wedding held on Saturday at Tashan Mararaba near the Fire Service in Gwoza town. Witnesses reported that one of the bombers, shockingly, carried a baby on her back as she entered the venue and detonated the device.

A military source in Gwoza further reported that a female suicide bomber crossed the road near a military base and detonated an IED, resulting in the death of a soldier. Subsequently, terrorists reinforced and attempted another attack on the 192 Brigade, but Nigerian Army troops successfully repelled the assault.
The bomber, identified as a young mother in her twenties, had pretended to be a guest at the wedding. As mourners were trying to bury the deceased from the initial bombing, another bomber, disguised as a mourner, detonated an IED at the burial site, killing one person.
These attacks highlight the severe security challenges in the region, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces during this critical period.
