WASHINGTON D.C. – A wave of concern swept through the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden's performance in Thursday night's debate with former President Donald Trump. Prominent Democrats are now urging Biden to consider withdrawing from the presidential race, fearing his perceived weaknesses may render him unelectable in November.

NBC News reported that the debate amplified criticisms long harbored by Trump's supporters, portraying Biden as unfit for office. This portrayal has struck a chord with some Democrats, who worry about Biden's ability to secure a victory.

"This was like watching a champion boxer past his prime," said one Democratic lawmaker. "It's time for his corner to throw in the towel," he added, suggesting that Biden should step aside.

The prospect of replacing Biden, however, presents significant challenges. It would necessitate an extraordinary movement among Democratic National Convention delegates, who largely support Biden's nomination. Despite this, some Democrats are contemplating such a scenario.

"It's time to talk about an open convention and a new Democratic nominee," stated another Democratic lawmaker, a staunch Biden supporter.

Despite these calls for a new candidate, doubts persist about the feasibility of such a move. Uncertainty looms over who could successfully replace Biden and whether a new candidate could triumph over Trump in the election.

Thursday's debate, hosted by CNN, highlighted Biden's vulnerabilities. Polls before the debate indicated a tight race between Biden and Trump. David Axelrod, a top adviser to former President Barack Obama, expressed his shock at Biden's performance. "There are going to be discussions about whether he should continue," Axelrod said on CNN. He also noted Biden's strong sense of pride and confidence, predicting he would not withdraw.

The last time a sitting president chose not to seek re-election was in 1968 when Lyndon Johnson opted out amidst poor prospects in the Democratic primaries. This historical precedent adds weight to the current debate within the Democratic Party.

Several Democrats predict that calls for Biden to withdraw will increase. "The chatter of replacement is absolutely going to explode," said a veteran Democratic strategist. "There is no coming back from this disaster."

Should Biden withdraw, the Democratic Party would face a potentially divisive struggle over his successor. Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black and female vice president, might automatically rise to the top of the ticket. This could create tensions and fragment voter bases at a crucial time.

"They need to change the nomination now," urged a Democratic operative. "Or just put Harris on top of the ticket."

A Democratic strategist with Capitol Hill connections revealed that lawmakers are hesitant to openly urge Biden to step down, although many are discreetly reviewing Democratic National Committee rules. The strategist, while personally admiring Biden's accomplishments, believes it's crucial for Biden to step aside for another candidate to emerge.

"For the first time, I think calling for Biden to step aside isn't heretical; it's the only responsible thing to do," the strategist said. "If we lose this election to Trump because we were too afraid to admit we were wrong about his age or too worried about an open convention, we can no longer call our party the defenders of democracy."

Many current and former Democratic officials chose to remain silent when asked about Biden's performance, opting not to comment publicly. One lawmaker humorously remarked, "The best thing I can do to help Joe Biden is to pretend I didn't get your text," highlighting the delicate nature of the situation.

As the debate's impact reverberates through the Democratic Party, the coming days will likely see intensified discussions about the future of Biden's candidacy and the party's strategy for the upcoming election.
